Baraboo Thunderbirds open the seasons at WI Dells Invitational

Good Morning,

The second day was played at Christmas Mountain. This course is a bit different from Trappers Turn with it being tighter holes so the focus was keeping the ball in play. I heard from all the players that the greens were so much different from Trappers so that was a big adjustment for the players to make today. The course just opened last week so the conditions were pretty raw and the greens were rolling very slow. Adjusting to the greens will be a theme for the beginning of the spring golf season.
Hunter Dersham led the way for Baraboo shooting 2 consistent scores of 78 at Trappers and a 77 at Christmas Mountain. This is a good start for Hunter playing solid golf and hitting the ball well. He didn’t have the best finish yesterday and was hoping for a bit lower score at the finish but he is right where he should be at.
Freshman Dane Hinz is also playing consistent golf shooting an 88 at Trappers and lowering to an 85 at Christmas Mountain. Dane has a very consistent swing and keeps the ball in play and eliminates making a big number on holes. I am pleased to see where he is at so early in the season as a freshman.
Camran Newman didn’t play as well as the previous day struggling adjusting to the greens at Christmas Mountain. He was not hitting his mid irons as well which ended up resulting in a score he isn’t happy with and knows what he needs to work on.
This two day tournament was a good starting point for the players and our Baraboo team. We were able to get a lot of players in competition between the varsity and JV tournament. Bryan Ashbeck and I will be able to reflect on how the kids played over the weekend and take that into practice this week before our next varsity event at The Oaks on Thursday.
