Thunderbirds continue to find their game at the Sparta Invitaional

Here are the scores from the Sparta Invitational from Saturday.

It was nice to get the players to my hometown and course I grew up playing. The Sparta golf course is a course that is enjoyable to play and has a variety of challenging holes as well as scorable holes. I wanted to get the players there for this tournament also because that is where Regionals are being hosted in a few weeks. It’s always nice to play rounds on a golf course to become familiar with it. We also had a chance to see many of the teams that will also be playing in the Regional.
The weather was not ideal for golf with temperatures staying in the 40s and there was a constant steady wind which made it even more chilly. Golf can be a challenging game in itself but adding in tough conditions can play a factor with the mental part of the game too. You just have to stay focused, not think negatively, and just grind out the round.
I was happy with the turnout of our team scores comparing to the other teams in the tournament. Sparta has a strong team this year and a very solid team score with a 317. Comparing with the other teams in our Regional we were only behind Sparta and Reedsburg by a few strokes. So our guys know that if they play how they know they can play they are able to compete as a team.
Hunter Dersham was hitting the ball well on the course and gave himself chances at making birdies and pars but had some trouble adjusting the the greens that were much slower than the last few courses we have played at Sauk and Reedsburg. Hunter finished with an 82 which isn’t that bad with the cold conditions. He knows that if he keeps hitting the ball that way and keeping himself in position, the putts will start to fall and the scores will lower.
Dane Hinz continues to play well and keeping his scores in the low-mid 40s and finished with an 87. Junior Sawyer Bennett is in the varsity rotation and hit the ball very well today. His first hole he almost made an eagle putt and made birdie and played the rest of the course well. He made a few higher numbers on a couple holes but all-in-all managed an 87.
Camran Newman has also been hitting the ball well and having similar scores right now. He had a lot of par opportunities but the putts weren’t falling resulting in a lot of bogeys. He had the 4th score of a 92.
Jack Rath rounded out the scoring with a 101.
The players have another busy week with a conference dual on Monday and Tuesday and a tournament on Thursday at Northern Bay.
